UPdate August 2024

August 2024
Ultima Pietra vineyards from above

Dear Friends,

We are enjoying the last warm breath of a hot summer. The growing season has been kind to us this year, setting the stage for a remarkable 2024 harvest.

Abundant Spring rains predisposed the vines for vigorous and bountiful grape production. Our key ally, the altitude of the vineyard, ensures that even on the hottest days the vines benefit from a cool evening breeze, essential for aromatic development. We are now awaiting the perfect moment to pick up our clippers and begin harvesting.

Medieval Jousting

It has been a delight to welcome many of you to Trequanda for Private Tastings this summer. You may have also visited the enchanting neighboring medieval village of Montisi, well worth exploring and just a stone’s throw away. Home to fewer than 300 inhabitants, Montisi proudly celebrates the Giostra di Simone every August. This authentic jousting competition commemorates a 1292 battle, complete with pageantry, drummers and flag wavers parading through the narrow streets.

Natural Sunscreen for Vines

Many of you have inquired about how we are addressing rising summer temperatures in Tuscany.  One of our eco-friendly solutions (and that of the most virtuous vintners) is the use of kaolin, the naturally occurring soft clay that gives porcelain its pure white color. When mixed with water and sprayed on the vines, the grapes delicately shimmer with tiny white mineral particles. This organic layer acts like a protective shield, reflecting the sun. Kaolin prevents overheating and water loss from the grapes and helps maintain acidity and polyphenol levels critical for well-balanced, complex wines. Rest assured, by the time we harvest, there is not a trace left on the bunches, as it is all gently washed away by late summer rains.

Henry James, another American with a deep-rooted love of Italy, wrote “It takes an endless amount of history to make even a little tradition.” As we approach our 6th harvest, this sentiment resonates deeply as our own traditions begin to take shape.

Every year our Chardonnay vendemmia begins at 3:30 a.m. under the light of the moon, as harvesting while the fruit is cold is critical to maintaining aromatic compounds. Afterwards we celebrate with a hearty American brunch. Our Italian team now expects their annual taste of egg casserole and my grandmother Stone's coffee cake.

We are incredibly grateful for and inspired by your continued support and enthusiasm for our wines.

Hope to see you soon - either at the vineyard or at one of our tasting events during our November trip to the States. If you wish to host a wine dinner for your friends, please let us know at info@ultimapietra.com and we will send all the fun details and options.

With gratitude,

Margot
