FEBRUARY 2023

Dear Friends,

It is pruning time, tempo di po-ta-tu-ra. These four syllables mark the official start of vintage 2023. As far as vineyard operations go, pruning is a far cry from the fanfare and glamour of harvest. This seems unfair; anyone can pick, but pruning is an art. It takes place in the quiet of winter and, though picturesque, the vines are dormant and leafless. The air is what Italians call terso i.e. downright cold. Temperature is important; we hope to be spared the dreaded late frosts that can half our crop. Chardonnay is our first budding grape and the last to be pruned.

The act of pruning is contemplative and solitary. Though we might all be in the same vineyard, we are spread out amongst the vine-rows, each left to the company of our own thoughts. Pruning is the most important time of the year and connects us deeply to every single vine. It also happens to be one of the most tedious subjects under the sun to describe.

We will spare you the details of guyot, vegetative balance, vine longevity and climate-proofing. Our job is to select, with surgeon-like skill, which vine shoots to promote and which to cull. Each vine requires individual consideration and a moment of triage before the shoots are cut or twisted upon themselves. These cuts and choices determine fruit distribution for the next two years. Pruning must be performed manually and mindfully.

Coming to America

Cellarwoman Corinna Banti and our guiding star, winemaker Giovanni Stella, are usually to be found in their natural environment amongst (or in!) the barrels in our cellar. This March we are planning to uproot them for our first ever #UPontheroad. We will visit some wineries in California and will pour our wines at a series of private events in Chicago.

Please let us know at info@ultimapietra.com if you would like to meet the team and taste together.

Heard It on the Grapevine

Temperatures last night were below freezing. At the end of January we had some most welcome snow. The saying is sotto la neve, pane, sotto l’acqua, fame. Literally translated as there is bread under snow and hunger under rain. This enigmatic utterance refers to the fact that snow is the best and safest way for the soil to absorb water. The rigid temperatures that accompany snow are a natural insecticide. Snow beats rain every time. Winter in Tuscany is a special experience. Many restaurants are closed and life takes on a simpler rhythm. After a day of pruning in the face-scouring winds, it is time for a steaming bowl of hearty Ribollita, before succumbing to deep dreamless sleep.

New Vintage Release : March 27th

We will be in touch next at the end of March. We are overflowing with excitement about our upcoming wine offerings: 2021 Chardonnay, 2020 Rosso and the 2020 Merito, 100% Merlot. Keep an eye on your email for the offer and be sure to save space in your cellar!

With gratitude and warm regards from Tuscany,

Margot
